Last year Anissa and her friend Tammy, who both served LDS missions in Hong Kong, decided to throw a Chinese New Year party. They joined up with another of their friends, Doreen (who is originally from Hong Kong) to plan and throw the party at our house. It was such a huge success they decided to make a tradition of it. Yesterday we celebrated the 2nd annual Chinese New Year Party at the Olsen house. It was a lot of fun. Anissa and her friends put a lot of time and effort into decorations, food, and fun! Here are some pictures of the house all decked out about 15 minutes before our guests (around 40) arrived.
Books, figurines, etc from Hong Kong.
We had two spreads of food to choose from. This was the first - Tammy did a great job of publishing the menus.
Apparently it is tradition in Hong Kong to use newspaper as a disposable tablecloth. The girls went to Chinatown in San Francisco a week or so ago and picked up some newspaper with Chinese characters, which we used as our disposable tablecloths.
There were some really unique items here, including 100-year-old eggs and chickens feet. Most of it was delicious....
All kinds of Chinese decorations.
All of our guests got a parting gift.
Although you can't see it very well, we had a Chinese karaoke DVD playing on the television.
Here are our helpers with the food. Tammy, Doreen, Ty, Sue, Tammy's parents (who let us use their catering equipment!), and of course, Anissa!
The food is looking great! It was a huge success!
More prep work.
It was hard to wait to eat until the party started! The BBQ pork was probably the biggest hit but everything was fantastic!
We had a few guests who were born in the year of the Dragon. They were given a challenge to peel a 100-year-old egg and eat it. The first one finished would win a prize (chopsticks). We were really proud of our guests who played along!! If it looks like Sue is gagging, it is probably because she is!
